I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “the shoemaker’s kids have no shoes”. Well, one of the primary challenges I have with my clients is keeping them focused on a limited number of goals and challenges. We all have limits to our resources and small to mid-size organizations are usually short on people, time and money.
So here I am. sharing my experience with you and letting you know. that if I were a shoemaker, my kids would have no shoes either.
My videos, LinkedIn posts, Instagram posts, have not been focused enough. I’ve been sharing my knowledge, expertise and experience across too many domains. It’s not been practical for my listeners or viewers to clearly determine how I can best help them, or even if I can help them at all.
The question that needs to be asked and answered is “what do you need as the leader of a small organization that will enhance the combined efforts of your people and yourself in the achievement. of the goals of your organization, which are designed to meet and fulfill your personal goals”. Let’s be very clear here. I’m not asking, what do you want? Rather, I am asking, what do you need as a business? The want is frequently a response to an emotion which is what drives most of our decisions in life. The need, when identified, is a response to what is really happening on the ground in your business and in your market or industry.
The most value I bring to my clients is when I help them in the arenas of articulating a vision, formulating strategy and building executable goal systems. including in this process is the critical function of matching people attributes to the requirements of the various functional positions in their organizations.
This job matching function frequently is the cause of many of the challenges the small business has. People who are not well matched to what it takes to be consistently high performers get frustrated, sometimes become disruptive and are not satisfying the needs of the organization, their managers or leaders, or the clients and customers that depend on their company.
Poor job matching outcomes include high turnover, poor quality, low productivity, lost revenue, low employee morale, and more, depending on your industry.
Know before you hire, transfer or promote a candidate. Avoid surprises down the road.
